Victorian Literature Redux: A Three-part Series!

ID : 1960

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic Come and reread Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations in the context of new critical perspectives. (Instructor will provide the context! You read the novels!) Contemporary scholars have read these classic works in ways that you may find genuinely surprising, and quite possibly convincing. In the third episode of this series, we’ll read some Victorian literature that (incredibly) used to be thought appropriate for children. Most of our time will be spent reading Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market”* (1862) aloud and discussing it in view of some contemporary criticism. We’ll also touch on F.W. Farrar's Eric, or Little by Little* (1858).

*available on Project Gutenberg or Internet Archive.
