ID :

« back to classes page
Starting in the early 1800s, the women’s rights and abolitionist movements in the U.S. were closely interconnected and both left a lasting and complicated legacy. We will explore the history of slavery in the New World, focusing on the relationship between women’s suffrage and abolitionism. We’ll examine milestones including the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention; the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments ratified after the Civil War; the 19th Amendment ratified in 1920; and the failed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). We’ll also examine famous advocates on both sides of the issues of abolition and women’s rights, including Abigail Adams, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Paulina Wright Davis, Abby Kelley Foster, William Lloyd Garrison, Abraham Lincoln, Lucy Stone, and Sojourner Truth.
