ClassGraphic This course explores key developments in architecture and urbanism from the 1930s through the late 20th century, focusing on the evolving ideas, figures, and movements that shaped the modern built environment. Beginning with the rise of the International Style, the visionary work of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the forward-looking spirit of the 1939 New York World’s Fair. This course traces the impact of post-war reconstruction and architectural innovation with the transplantation of Bauhaus ideals to America; the rise of post-war design culture, and the complex legacy of Urban Renewal programs in reshaping American cities. The final lecture examines the bold emergence of Brutalism, the contributions of late modernist architects, the critiques and controversies that surrounded Brutalist design, and the eventual transition to postmodernism.
