ClassGraphic Kings Towne, RI (comprising North and South Kingstown, Exeter, and Narragansett prior to 1723) has a unique and fascinating history, complicated by damaged and missing town records following a 1870 fire in North Kingstown. This course will explore this early period through the lens of its surviving (and reconstructed) records, examining how the history of the region affected government practices and record-keeping from colonial times, and how the damaged records were reconstructed for a recent 9-volume publication. Designed for general public interest, this class might also interest local historians and genealogists.
