The story of the land on which the university sits is long and complicated. However, this history is invisible to most members of the campus community. Ancestors of the Narragansett, the only federally recognized tribe in this area, lived and worked here for millennia. Archaeological work performed prior to the construction of the Ryan Center in the 1990s revealed a late 18
th-century plantation and burial ground associated with the Niles family. More recently, an interdisciplinary and collaborative URI faculty initiative is working to broaden the insights into the history and archaeology of the URI Campus. Join us on a walking tour of URI campus to learn about the history of this land and university.
