Here Be Dragons: Mapping Our Worlds
ID :
1916
« back to classes page
Before GPS, we had maps. Star maps, sea charts, street maps, and “You Are Here” maps (which may confuse as many people as they help). Maps on mammoth tusks and on cave walls at Lascaux. Maps to get us from here to there, help us figure out the source of a nineteenth-century cholera outbreak, or document poverty near Hull House. Maps to trace the routes of ancient migrants by their DNA, or project future movements of earth’s tectonic plates. Maps of fantasy worlds, and possibly of our own lives. This overview of cartographic history comes with an optional assignment: think about mapping your own life.
