Free Speech: Is There Such a Thing?

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic The concept of free speech is, in many respects, a misnomer. First, speech serves as a metaphor for all forms of expression (writing, visual and performing art, public demonstrations, blogging and other forms of electronic messaging, flags, clothing, etc.) Second, communication has never been free—it has always come at a price, from a positive or negative reaction from listeners to outright banning, imprisonment, excommunication, exile, and ultimately loss of life.

It is not only governments that curtail and restrain free speech. Private companies, public organizations, social groups, political parties, religious organizations, editors and publishers, and the military, among many others, also limit personal expression.

We will examine the definitions and various forms of expression, look at the history of the concept of free speech, and explore the constraints that have been put on free expression by governments, religions, the military, social norms, etc. We will also look at other modern democracies, particularly in Western Europe, and how they limit free speech, as well as the debates around our Constitution’s First Amendment.
