Walter Massie - Rhode Island's Wireless Pioneer

ID : 1548
« back to classes page
CourseGraphic Walter Massie, a Providence native and civil engineer, became fascinated with the potential of wireless radio at the turn of the 20th century. Ranked among the leading American experts in the field at the time, his RI-based wireless communications company eventually fell victim (as did other U.S. wireless efforts) to the relentless efforts by Guglielmo Marconi to corner the worldwide wireless radio market. This program looks at how wireless radio (and eventually broadcasting as we know it) evolved thanks to Massie and his contemporaries. (Massie’s Point Judith wireless radio station has been completely restored by the New England Wireless and Steam Museum in East Greenwich.)
