Barns and Animal Pounds of R.I. - A Vanishing Landscape

ID : 2037

« back to classes page
The barn is the most important building on any farm. This class will cover the past and present of barns in Rhode Island, explaining differences between English barns and adaptations colonists made in developing the New England barn style. It will include examples of some highly ornamented animal housing used on gentlemen’s country estates. In addition, participants will learn about animal “pounds,” which were town-owned structures maintained by “keepers” much like today’s cat and dog pounds. Sadly, many barns and pounds are vanishing from our landscapes.
