The History of Modern Architecture and Urbanism

ClassGraphic This course will explore the evolution of modern architecture and city planning from the mid-19th century through to the 1970s, with an emphasis on the transformative developments in Europe and America. Through an interdisciplinary lens, we will delve into the social, technological, and artistic forces that have shaped architectural design during this dynamic period. Part I focuses on the evolution from the 19th century to the emergence of early Modernism.  The first lecture explores the impact of the Industrial Revolution, including the rise of iron and glass construction, and the stylistic movements of Eclecticism and Art Nouveau. The second lecture focuses on the early 20th-century avant-garde, highlighting the radical innovations of the Bauhaus, the functional ideals of modernism, and Le Corbusier’s influential vision for architecture and design. The third lecture traces the origins and conceptual foundations of modern urban planning, investigating early models and ideas that shaped the modern city.
