Please read:  Required Reading: The Oresteia: Agamemnon: The Libation Bearers; the Eumenides, by Aeschylus, translated by Robert Fagles (Penguin Classics)

Assignment for the first class: Please read Agamemnon and come prepared to discuss the motives and actions of the primary characters. Questions to ponder: Is revenge ever justified? How do the impacts of war as presented in the play compare to our modern experience? What does the character of Clytemnestra have to say about the role of women in ancient Athens? What are the implications of Cassandra’s warnings, and how do they work themselves out in the play?
