CourseGraphic It's the longest border between two countries anywhere in the world, stretching 5,525 miles, created when Europeans wrested the lands of North America from the Indigenous people. Until recently, it has been freely crossed, in both directions, largely open and free of conflict. But at least four times this invisible line became embroiled in controversy and played a vital role in historical events: 1) as the northern terminus of the Underground Railroad; 2) near-war in the Pacific Northwest; 3) a safe haven during the Vietnam War; and 4) today. We will delve into the details behind what happened and why and how it affected the two neighbors, taking a visual look at the varied geography along our way.
