ID : 1518
« back to classes page
ClassGraphic The wrecks of three ships, the Warrior, the Spartan, and the Larchmont, are all connected in an unusual way—calico. Calico was an important commodity in the 19th and 20th century and often carried in the cargo holds of ships trying to navigate the difficult waters surrounding Block Island. The windfall of salvaged fabric from these wrecks was a boon for islanders and often used in home sewing. A study of Block Island quilts and the discovery of one quiltmaker’s diaries adds richness and dimension to the marine disasters.
