Sing the Marseillaise: Screening Nationalism

ID : 1400
« back to classes page
ClassGraphic In the film Grande Illusion, the Marseillaise is sung early, but the emotion it evokes is offset by the hard-bitten attitudes displayed by the French captives in the German POW camp. There is no such effort to weaken the song’s impact in Casablanca. It’s been said that audiences all over the U.S. rose to their feet during the performance. We’ll explore the implications for the display and experience of nationalism in contemporary democracies.
