CourseGraphic The Newport & Wickford Railroad and Steamboat Company was built in 1870 by a group of wealthy New York and Rhode Island men who summered in Newport and wanted a convenient route from New York City. They created a quirky little 3-1/2-mile connection from the main line railroad to Wickford harbor, where passengers boarded a company-owned ferry for a comfortable ride across Narragansett Bay to Newport. This tale traces the life of the line until it was ultimately abandoned by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. We’ll also touch on the Seaview Electric Railroad, the shoreline trolley route that ran to Narragansett Pier and crossed paths with the N&W in Wickford village.
