Understanding Septic Systems

ID : 1355
« back to classes page
CourseGraphic Join staff from the URI’s Onsite Wastewater Resource Center to learn about advanced (nitrogen-reducing) onsite wastewater treatment systems in Rhode Island. Onsite wastewater treatment systems, often referred to as septic systems, can contribute nitrogen to local groundwater supplies that may lead to increased nitrogen levels in drinking water and surface water bodies. Advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems are now required in environmentally sensitive areas by the state of Rhode Island to help protect critical resources and public health. We’ll discuss nitrogen and the importance of treating nitrogen in our wastewater, how advanced wastewater technologies function, and current research describing the efficacy of these systems.
