Science Fiction: “Go Anyplace, Examine Everything”

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic The late-20th century writer Octavia Butler said: “Science fiction frees you to go anyplace and examine anything.” That has been true since Johannes Kepler wrote the first science fiction book, Somnium, in 1609, and Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein in 1818. Some of the greatest S.F. writers and filmmakers have taken us “anyplace,” from the limits of outer space and advanced alien civilizations, to the creation of new species and the most remarkable possible future of our own world.

We will look at S.F. as a genre in literature and film and its importance in Western and Eastern culture by focusing on certain themes, writers, and filmmakers. As the famous S.F. writer Ray Bradbury (author of Farenheit 451) said: “Science fiction is the most important literature in the history of the world, because it's the history of ideas, the history of our civilization birthing itself."
