ID : 1261
« back to classes page
CourseGraphic In 1853, Ida Lewis was only 11 years old when her father Hosea was appointed keeper of Newport’s Lime Rock Lighthouse, which marked the entrance to the often stormy harbor. Four years later, he suffered a debilitating stroke, and Ida began assisting her mother in tending the light. As a young woman, she gained worldwide fame in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for saving the lives of numerous individuals from the turbulent waters around the light station. She was named keeper following her father’s death and while caring for her sister and invalid mother. Ever modest of her achievements, she remained devoted to her duties until her own sudden death in October 1911. This richly illustrated lecture portrays the life and legacy of one of the most famous women of her time and highlights the roles played by other women in the care of lighthouses across the country.
*The 113th anniversary of the death of Ida Lewis.
