Fast Fashion: A Historical Perspective

ClassGraphic Concerns about “fast fashion,” and its environmental and humanitarian impacts, are becoming increasingly mainstream. But what is “fast fashion,” and how does it differ from the production and distribution of clothing in the past? How, and why, did it emerge? This course surveys the development of our current fashion system from its early modern origins, through the Industrial Revolution, and into the 20th century. We will examine how developments in trade, technology, and media have changed the lives and livelihoods of dressmakers, tailors, seamstresses, and factory laborers—and how some modern makers are looking to the past to imagine a more sustainable fashion future.
