ClassGraphic Born in 1755, Axel von Fersen inherited wealth, a propensity for languages, international connections, and good looks. Access to the highest societies enabled his participation in the political upheavals of his time. From Paris to Stockholm to Newport to Yorktown his language and military skills were useful to Sweden, France, and America in the American Revolution. Stationed in Newport as General Rochambeau’s adjutant he served with distinction. Reputed to be Marie Antoinette’s lover he returned to France, but faced with the revolutions of the time, he found he could save neither the Queen, the French Monarchy, nor eventually even himself.
