Ingmar Bergman: Cinematic Visionary

In a letter to Bergman, Stanley Kubrick wrote: "I believe you are the greatest film-maker at work today [...], unsurpassed by anyone in the creation of mood and atmosphere, the subtlety of performance, the avoidance of the obvious, the truthfulness and completeness of characterization...”

We will screen and analyze eight of Bergman’s films: The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957), The Magician (1958), The Virgin Spring (1960), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Winter Light (1963), Cries and Whispers and lastly, his masterpiece, Persona (1966). Participants will receive several reviews about a week before each showing. On the day of the showing, we will screen the movie, then discuss it: Was it visually appealing, what did the film have to say, and was it successful?
