In an Italian-American enclave where loyalty is everything, one man’s forbidden desire and self-delusion ignite a devastating community betrayal. Arthur Miller’s 1955 masterpiece, A View from the Bridge, remains a raw and urgent modern Greek tragedy, pitting the codes of the Brooklyn waterfront against the brutal pull of fate. Participants will explore Miller’s life and his belief in the “common man” as a tragic hero, while examining the play’s enduring themes: undocumented immigration, patriarchal control, masculinity, justice, and the fear of losing one’s place in the world. Through the psychological unraveling of longshoreman Eddie Carbone, students will witness how pride, desire, and secrecy lead to the protagonist’s tragic downfall.
