ClassGraphic We’ll discuss the trajectory of the history of the Bell School in Richmond, RI (ca. 1826–1935) and how it is representative of all the one-room schools that once dotted the New England landscape. We’ll start with a tour of the school led by Kristen Chambers, president of the Richmond Historical Society and follow up with a classroom session the next week. We’ll learn about the travails of students, teachers, and parents negotiating their roles at the dawn of public education and watch an oral-history video of a teacher describing her experiences in a rural one-room school classroom in nearby Exeter.
