ClassGraphic Their ships slipped in and out of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay in the 17th and 18th centuries. Privateers sailed with official government authorization to capture enemy merchant vessels. Captains and crews shared bounty with the government. But some went into business for themselves and flew the black flag of piracy. Their voyages brought fortune to some and ended at the gallows for others. On July 14, 1723, twenty-six pirates met the hangman in Newport. Before long, colonial America had enough and the Golden Era ended. Today, the legend of elusive treasure troves persists. We’ll examine that colorful period and the men (and women) who sought fortune under the Jolly Roger.
