"My Dearest Friend": Our Nation's Founding Seen through the Letters of Abigail & John Adams

ClassGraphic During the formative years of our nation, Abigail and John Adams corresponded through more than a thousand letters, which they thoughtfully preserved for posterity. These letters offer us a valuable insiders' perspective on the challenges, anxieties, and achievements characteristic of that era. In this two-week course, we will examine selected exchanges between what is often regarded as America's first "power couple." Week 1 will look at correspondence concerning the time leading up to open hostilities. Week 2 will feature a "visit" with an elderly Abigail Adams remembering some of the letters related to the writing of the Declaration of Independence, the war, and eventual peace.
