Hurricane History of Southern Rhode Island

ClassGraphic A review of the historical record from 1635 to the present will be provided. Detailed weather data and subsequent investigative reports, photos and stories will be presented. A particular focus will be on the hurricanes of 1938 and Carol in 1954, the last two Category 3 storms to hit this region. This data will be supplemented with a discussion of various recent sediment studies undertaken in MA and RI that put together a record of hurricanes going back for 2000 years. What does this history tell us about current risk in Southern Rhode Island? Is another major storm likely? The lecture will conclude with various climate change studies and what they indicate for future hurricanes in New England as well as the status of emergency management planning in the State for a major storm.
