ClassGraphic What happened to the old downtown business district in Narragansett and what explains its transformation into its current design? Major hurricanes in 1938 and 1954 flooded downtown and led the Army Corps of Engineers to undertake a storm protection program. Some citizens considered the downtown rundown and honky-tonk, which led Narragansett to embark on one of the largest urban renewal projects ever undertaken in a small community. Over the course of three years from 1967-70, the town developed plans and ultimately received approval for the demolition and rebuilding of 28 acres. These plans went awry in the next decade and produced what many consider an example of a failed urban renewal program.
