Reforesting Newport: Miantonomi Park

ClassGraphic Join the Newport Tree Conservancy (NTC) for a walk through Newport's largest public greenspace, Miantonomi Park. Over the last decade disease, climate change, and invasive plant species have significantly reduced the forest canopy in a major portion of this historic park. NTC living collections manager, Joe Verstandig, and City of Newport grounds foreman, Charlie Ridolf, will highlight notable specimen trees and recent plantings, focusing on reforestation plantings they’ve partnered on over the last several years. Silvicultural techniques, species selection, and invasive species management will be discussed in detail. The tour will end with a visit to the park’s World War I Memorial tower.

Please read:  Note:
  • The guided tour will be a .75 mile loop through the woods of Miantonomi Park, on compacted dirt/gravel roads and paths, with the potential for some uneven ground. We will be walking uphill to start, before descending downhill to finish, with no steep inclines.
  • The meeting location will be the southern gate, also along Hillside Ave and near a beautiful grove of Dawn Redwood Trees. See attached image for more specifics.
  • Parking will be on the street along Hillside Avenue, which runs along the eastern side of the park.
