ClassGraphic With the arrival of the fall equinox, there’s a chill in the air, brilliant color in leaves and flowers, and a sky filled with southbound migrants. All of this activity, from Jack Frost’s foliage-painting artistry to the migratory restlessness known as zugunruhe, proceeds under the direction of physical and biological mandates. To understand the myriad ways this season impacts the citizenry of the natural world, including us, we’ll take a deep, illustrated dive into how scientists have teased apart the inner workings of fall and how one naturalist and his colleagues have presented these discoveries in words and photographs. In our second session, we’ll hit the trail to observe autumn in action.

Notice

Please read:  Note: The second session will take place outdoors at a local coastal wildlife preserve, the exact locale to be determined. We’ll be walking about a half mile on relatively flat and wide trails (not wheelchair accessible) in search of migrating animals, from Monarch butterflies and dragonflies, to, of course, birds, as well as the wildflowers that can fuel their travels. Since the terrain is likely to vary from beach sand to muddy pond edges, please wear appropriate waterproof shoes or boots and long pants. We’ll discuss bug- and tick-proofing strategies in our first class.
