ClassGraphic Once common in Rhode Island’s shrublands and young forests, the New England cottontail has declined because of habitat loss and competition from the introduced eastern cottontail. This course offers an accessible look at the science and hands-on restoration work aimed at recovering this native rabbit. We’ll explore how biologists are reestablishing populations on state and federal lands through captive breeding and strategic releases, how habitat is being restored and monitored, and why strong conservation partnerships are essential to the species’ recovery. Participants will gain an inside view of the ongoing effort to restore this species to Rhode Island.
