Pen, Ink and Wash: Drawing Home Scapes

Sketching in ink and painting with color washes is a facile way to capture lively architectural, rural and urban landscape imagery. Southern Rhode Island, with its stone walls, farms, mills and historical houses - from beach cottages to palatial mansions - provides a broad offering of landscape subject matter for the artist. We will aim at improving our perspective, composition, contrast and light values while helping to loosen up our drawing style. Exercises will offer ways of meeting the challenge of a timid drawer who says, “I can barely draw a stick figure.” In class demonstrations, individual attention and encouragement will key us into understanding what drawing is.

MATERIALS LIST

Watercolor Paints:
  • Pan water color sets are preferred as they are more portable however, if you have tube watercolor you may use those. Plain (no florescent, glitter or shimmery paints).

Ink:

  • Higgen's Black Ink: small bottle permanent ink

Watercolor paper:

  • Watercolor or multi-media heavy paper- various size pads from 9” x 11” or larger.
  • Small multi-media pad or sketchbook roughly 5" x 7"

Brushes:

  • Soft watercolor brushes
  • Sizes: Rounds in sizes 8 up to 16 with pointy tips (1/8th to 3/4 inch- diameter)
  • 3/8" to 1/2" flat brush
  • A larger mop brush - 3/4" to 1" diameter for washes

Pencils:

  • 2B various pencils or mechanical pencil

Pens:

  • Permanent ink micro drawing/writing pens- size .05 or so
  • Quill pen or old-style fountain pen with a small nibs

Other:

  • Gum eraser or very very soft eraser
  • Watercolor panel: We will work on individual paper sheets. You will need a substrate
  • panel of stiff sheet plastic or thin smooth plywood about 11” X 15” to tape the paper down
  • Drafting tape
  • 2 Jars for water - tall enough to hold the brushes
