Contemporary Buddhist Ethics

ClassGraphic One could argue we have a contemporary consensus and there is very little non-trivial to argue about in the field of ethics. Who in their right mind would advocate for rampant dishonesty or the compelling need for wanton killing? In the West there has been a general shift from the juridical Abrahamic religions’ emphasis on obedience to divinely given commands to the Buddhist emphasis on ethical precepts as training guidelines helpful in pursuing a/the spiritual path to a liberated consciousness. In this course we will use Engaged Buddhist David Loy’s very sophisticated framing to tease out some issues not so easily dealt with on the way to a vital cultural revolution.

Assignment for 1st class: Read the first 30 pages of Money, Sex, War, and Karma.
