CourseGraphic In this class we will read and think about The Moonstone (1868), often considered the first English detective novel. The Moonstone is Wilkie Collins’s masterpiece, published in 1868. It inaugurates the form of the classic English detective story: a mysterious and compelling crime in an English country house, a large cast of potential suspects, and a brilliant investigator. Told from a variety of character perspectives, it is domestic and international in its scope, suspenseful and delightful, and will leave you with a new way of thinking about all the detective stories that came after, from Agatha Christie to the Knives Out movies. This will be a discussion-based class, and we’ll sink our teeth into character, plot, and influence in our conversations.
