Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard examines the lives of characters living in pre-revolutionary Russia, a time when traditional values and ideals were being questioned. Aristocrats long for a world that is rapidly disappearing, while recently liberated characters struggle to adapt to their changing status. In our class, we will discuss the conflicts and evolution of lives in a world they do not fully understand. We will proceed from The Cherry Orchard to beautifully crafted short stories such as “Gooseberries” and “The Lady with the Pet Dog.” Throughout these works, characters struggle to find meaning in a topsy-turvy world. The stories are open-ended, allowing for different interpretations, and they have contemporary relevance.
