Exploring Dvorák’s “American Quartet” with the Terra String Quartet
ID :
2127
« back to classes page
This summer the Kingston Chamber Music Festival (KCMF) is offering a unique opportunity to OLLI members. Whether you are an aficionado of chamber music or wish to dip your toe into something new, you will meet selected world-class musicians and hear both traditional and non-traditional compositions.
The event will include an intergenerational workshop with discussion and performance by the Terra String Quartet; Harriet Langley (violin), Amelia Dietrich (violin), Chih-Ta Chen (viola), and Audrey Chen (cello), winners of the 2025 Naumburg Chamber Music Competition. The workshop will focus on Dvo?ák’s
“American Quartet”
which was written during his residency in the United States and first performed in Boston in 1894. The Terra String Quartet will explore the music’s ties to African American, Indigenous and American folk musical influences fostering shared engagement and reflection on America’s 250th Anniversary.
All participants will then receive tickets to attend the KCMF opening concert July 24, at 7:30pm where the music they learned about will be performed in the first concert of the 2026 Kingston Chamber Music Festival by the Terra String Quartet. Natalie Zhu, KCMF Artistic Director, carefully crafted the RI250 celebration as an event that brings the audience to the music of 1776, immersing them in the sounds that filled the chambers of America's independence. From the sounds of 1776, the audience transitions to two quartets that move through time to an authentically American, vibrant, inclusive, and collaborative musical experience. This commemorative concert program is an artistic journey from the music of 1776 to modern day America.
